The money is terribly inconsistent, and if you’re any good at sales start working for a bank and make good stable money

(disclaimer :this advice does not apply to a high end luxury car salesman. If you’re good at selling Porches , you just keep doing you dude)

Honestly if you can get into a luxury brand in NoVa, you can make a killing. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi basically all sell themselves here. I've never been into car sales, is it an easy 6 figures around here?

It’s not an easy 6 figures, but it’s easily the easiest way to make high 5 figures, and a possible 6 figures. Which is more than I can say for a good number of jobs up here.

I was actually pretty consistent. Barring the occasional terrible or spectacular month, I sold 10-12 cars a month, which is pretty good money in luxury cars.

Thanks for the insight. It’s just crazy how fast luxury cars move off lots here. I was at BMW the other day picking something up and this guy comes in with his wife, no negotiations or anything, tells the salesmen “I’ll take the blue X5 with the M-sport package”. Salesmen gets the papers and the deal is underway in the same amount of time it took the parts guy to grab a clip for me from the back.

I don’t hate car salespeople. I just hate ignorant car salespeople that don’t listen.

No, my budget is $9,000. No, I’m not interested in leasing a new CX-9.

I dunno. If you want to do it, do it, if you don't don't. It would be your choice. I kind of wish you around here when I was still job searching, since I considered working at a dealership before my current job opportunity came up.

Also, I don’t hate car salesmen. I just hate scummy car salesmen. Big difference.

I found out my local Ford/Chrysler dealer, where I worked 2.5 years ago, only has 4 salesmen and is desperately searching.

I want the money, I want to sell cars, it had its good days. Paydays guaranteed at least one good day every 14 days. But I know it’ll be miserable, working 45-50 hours a week, dealing with asshole managers. The stress of keeping your numbers up. No thanks I’ll take the approxametly $1000/month lass im making now and be happy.

The dealership I worked for garunteed 2000/per month. You got 200-300 per car in commission, plus bonuses for stuff like selling x amout of New Rams, or hitting more than 12 cars, excetera. So say you sold 11 cars and they added up to 2600, but if it’s December and you only sold 8 cars and they only adds up to 1700, you stil get 2000 for the month.

So worst case you got 24,000/year a living wage in my part of the country, but you could make 40,000 if you killed it all year.

I’m a personal banker and I make $37,000 a year plus commission ($1 for every $1000 in loans for example) plus full benefits. We’re definitely salespeople too, though I will say it’s very draining. My skills set consisted of being a bartender for three years before I was a banker.

Like I said, if you're selling luxury, keep doing that. I know a Corvette salesman who makes $15k a month but that's not the same as a Chevy salesman.

Yeah, it’s surprizing how much of sales is just knowing how to bs with people, just being able to form some Semblence of a relationship with a person. If you can’t get people to like you, and feel like they can trust you, or that you care about them, you won’t get your sale. So it’s not shocking that you went from barren ding to what is basically sales.

And proof that a banker is a salesperson. My wife and I have gotten two automotive loans from the same credit union. We loved the loan officer who worked with us she was great. But when we went back to that credit union for a home loan the made up talk to another woman who handles those loans. She was downright annoying, and condesending, she was just unprofessional. Needless to say we won’t be going back to that credit union when we find another house we’re interested in.

We hate bad car sales people. We approve of enthusiasts as car sales people.

The trick in this industry, no matter which side of the building you’re in or which manufacturer you work for, is to find a good store. There are massive differences in pay, benefits, people, morale, and everything else you can think of from one store to the next. Even within the same corporate owner group and manufacturer. If you didn’t like it at the last store you were at, find a different one.

For example, I transferred to a new store quite a while back, same owner and still Benz. For doing the exact same job I’m making 30% more money with 10% less effort and 50% more freedom. This is my 4th dealer and I’ve been at a bunch of shops before that. But I never settled until I found one that treats its employees like humans.

That was at Cadillac. We had an open floor so I could sell new and used. Used was my jam because being an enthusiast, I could have an intelligent conversation about pretty much any car the customer was interested in. And on the new side, I knew the cars so well I could pick out a car for people and they Would love it. The reason I didn’t close more was I wasn’t pushy.

See, I thought getting a 9-5 Would be better too. But the job is not what I expected, and the stress levels are just as high, just a different kind. So I’m getting all the stress, and none of the money.

Yeah that’s different. I love my job now. Great company, good bosses, and flexible schedule. I’m just making ten bucks and hour instead of 12-15. But it’s working out for now. A friend of mine has some connections at the Hinda Toyota dealership in town though, so Im considering getting back into the game.
